Every day, students walk across college campuses carrying more than backpacks and laptops.

They carry expectations.

Responsibilities.

Anxiety.

Financial pressures.

Family obligations.

Grief.

Trauma.

Dreams.

Hope.

Fear.

And often, these experiences remain invisible.

As a psychology professor, counselor, and researcher, one of the greatest lessons I learned during my doctoral research is that every student has a story. Unfortunately, we don't always take the time to understand it before drawing conclusions about behavior, performance, or engagement.

What if we changed that?

What if empathy became our first response instead of our last?
